Evidence of Rice in North-Eastern Thailand (ประเพณีข้าวของไทย)



Rice has been the main source of food for the people in the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS)since a long time ago. Some of the evidences showing the relationship between rice and the inhabitants of the North-East of Thailand are, for example; rice husk found in a pottery at the archaeological site of Non-Nok-Tha, Phuwiang District, Khon-kaen Province; and, rock painting at Pha Mon Noy, Ta Gum Village,Huay Phai Subdistrict, Khong Jeam District, Ubonratchathani Province, which depicts a man aiming his bow at a big deer, behind it were two men and two deer in the middle of a rice field. It is evident that people in this region have been eating rice since a long time ago. Therefore, it is interesting to find out that the evidence of Rice in North-Eastern Thailand is glutinous rice or rice.

Conclusion is Human selects different kinds of wild rice suited to their environment. This conforms to the Cultural Ecology theory and the geographical features of the North-East of Thailand and the evidence of Rice at the archaeological site is presume that it’s glutinous rice and enables the biggest yield of glutinous rice.
As a result, the people of this area mainly consume glutinous rice causing rice-related culture.
